Making Your Move Smooth

Book your Removal

Call ian corston for Adelaide Removals as soon as you know the date of your move.  Once you have a confirmed booking in place I will contact you 7 days prior to the move and again the day before, to confirm the move is still happening.   Yes things can change, even at the minute.  As a former mortgage broker I have seen examples of this.  Not all property settlements go as planed.  Sometimes a last minute glitch with a conveyancer or bank may delay the settlement of your property or the one you are purchasing.  If for any reason there is a possibility of a delay contact your removalist as early as possible to reschedule.

Before you move

Moving is always a good time to de-clutter.  Have a garage sale before you move to help pay for the move with those items you no longer use, need or want.  Friends of mine did this in reverse recently.  They paid to have all their stuff moved and then realized they had way too much, then had a garage sale.  If they had of done it the other way around their move would have cost less. Your move is charged at an hourly rate, the less you move the less time it takes the less you have to pay. The $600 they made from the garage sale after the move would have paid for most of the cost to move.

Get the family involved

The children will be just as stressed as you are about moving.  They may be leaving an area where they have the comfort of family and friends for the unknown.  The best way to alleviate their stress is to get them involved.  Have them help with the preparation for the move so that they feel a part of the process.  In particular involve them with packing their own possessions.  Make sure their favorite toys are the last things packed.  You don’t want to be rummaging through boxes looking for their teddy bear or favorite game 2 or 3 days before the move just to get peace and quite back in the household.

Packing boxes

  • Packing can be arranged for you if you choose but I would always recommend that you pack your most prized and valuable breakables yourself.  This way you can rest assured they are packed to your satisfaction.
  • Save a considerable amount of money by doing your own packing.  Normally you will have several weeks’ notice the move is coming.
  • It pays to start packing as soon as possible, don’t leave to the last day.  It always takes longer than you think and more boxes than you would imagine.
  • Never overload your boxes.  You are far better off having more boxes with less in than trying to cram too much into them.  It will minimize damage and make handling for both you and your removalist far more comfortable.
  • Try to get as many boxes of a uniform size as possible.  It makes it easier for storage before, during and after your move.
  • Don’t pack heavy items on top of breakables.
  • Make sure you label all boxes with breakables as FRAGILE
  • Don’t store heavy boxes on top of those with lightweight or fragile items in them.

Above all be careful! Strained backs or necks are the last thing you want before moving day!
