Box Packing Tips

Packing boxes

  • Packing can be arranged for you if you choose but I would always recommend that you pack your most prized and valuable breakables yourself.  This way you can rest assured they are packed to your satisfaction.
  • Save a considerable amount of money by doing your own packing.  Normally you will have several weeks’ notice the move is coming.
  • It pays to start packing as soon as possible, don’t leave to the last day.  It always takes longer than you think and more boxes than you would imagine.
  • Never overload your boxes.  You are far better off having more boxes with less in than trying to cram too much into them.  It will minimize damage and make handling for both you and your removalist far more comfortable.
  • Try to get as many boxes of a uniform size as possible.  It makes it easier for storage before, during and after your move.
  • Don’t pack heavy items on top of breakables.
  • Make sure you label all boxes with breakables as FRAGILE
  • Don’t store heavy boxes on top of those with lightweight or fragile items in them.
  • Try not to make any one box too heavy.  If you have a lot of books for example they would be better packed into 5 smaller boxes of around 20 kg each instead of two large ones of 50 kg each.
  • Clearly label each box so and your removalist knows where it needs to go when you arrive at your new home.
  • Colour coding boxes can be a helpful.  Buy boxes of coloured labels and put the appropriate label on the box when you have packed it for where you want it to go in your new home.  For example RED for the kitchen, BLUE for bedroom one, ORANGE for living room and so on.  When you arrive at your new home get a packet of post-it notes write the colour RED on one a attach it to the kitchen door BLUE on the bedroom door and so on.  This way you and your removalist will know exactly where you want each box to go.
  • When your boxes are packed store them somewhere that has easy access. A room that is not used as much or better still if you have a lockup garage or carport.  It is better to load the boxes onto the truck first so that they are last off.  After all you can’t start unpacking them until you have your furniture in place to store thing in.
